One of the well-known freedom fighters and revolutionary, Madam Lal Dhingra was born on September 18, 1883, in Amritsar to the family of an eye specialist who was then serving as a Civil Surgeon of Amritsar at that time.
Influenced by his family, Madan Lal was good at studies. He had a great interest in history, politics, and arts. After being aware of India’s condition at that time, he was greatly willing to fight for the freedom of India.
After completing his basic education from MB Intermediate College, he went to Lahore to pursue further education at Government College University.
In 1904, when he was doing a Master of Arts program, he was barred from the college because he protested against the principal’s order for wearing blazers made from the imported cloth.
Then he went to England to study mechanical engineering at University College, London. He got his focus on the freedom struggle tuned after meeting Shyamji Krishna Varma and Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.
After getting in contact with other Indian revolutionists, Dhingra planned to kill a well known British officer. The reason for choosing Curzon Wyllie for this was that he was the main person being responsible for educating the Indian youth in Britain.
Through his education, he was making the youth loyal to the British government and was disconnecting it from its origin i.e. India. It was on July 1, 1909, when Curzon Wyllie, after attending a function, was leaving the hall that Dhingra fired continuous five shots at him. He also killed doctor Cowasji Lalkaka when he tried to save Wyllie.
After that Dhingra was arrested and was announced a death sentence. 17 August 1909 was the great day in the Indian freedom history when he was hanged. He had no regrets over his acts and even after being announced a death sentence, he said that he want to born in India and to sacrifice his life once again.
